What is Stress?

It's our body's adaptive response to stimuli that bring excessive pressure upon us due to psychological or physical demands placed on us; thus, causing a fight or flight response.

Flight & Fight Response, also known as acute stress response, occurs when we are confronted with a stressful situation. Adrenaline and cortisol hormones start releasing in order to prepare the body to either fight or flight away from the situation.

Physical signs that can be observed during this response are dilated pupils, pale & flushed skin, rapid heart and breathing rate, etc.

Habits that cause stress & their solution -

There are hundreds of reasons that may lead to a stressful condition. But, in one sentence “it is our own habits & attitude that decide the level of stress; we might go through in our life. Here are some of the habits that we will see below –

1. High Expectation -

There are many people who have higher expectations with almost everyone around them. We are driven by a sense of entitlement, and always wanting to receive and receive only. We want to receive love & affection, respect, care by others or some other kind of support. We become more demanding and always focusing on what remained unfulfilled. If our expectations are fulfilled we become happy; otherwise, such kind of mindset (sense of entitlement) might also cause a lot of stress upon us.

Solution –

We need to realize that it is our mind’s tendency to look always over what we don’t have or get and not realizing what we already have got. We do not feel gratitude for what we already have received. Being grateful to the things you already possess and inculcating the habit of giving, will raise your vibration to higher frequency and also you will feel more positive and content that will attract more abundance in life.

2. Being a Perfectionist -

A person is a perfectionist if he has the approach of either “all or nothing”. Such people live their life with the principle that either they will do perfectly or will not do at all if, somehow, not able to do perfectly. They will not accept anything less than perfection, and such an attitude not let them feel grateful for what they have done nicely.  A person, with perfectionist mindset, wastes his lot of time in waiting for the perfect moment or in doing things flawlessly. Thus, we burden ourselves taking unnecessary stress upon us.

Solution –

Being Perfectionist is good, but only when we are not obsessive for it. We need to see clearly that how much we have lost already in terms of time, money, energy and mental peace. Perfectionism makes us procrastinator, impolite, discouraged and physically & mentally ill. Instead of stressing ourselves for doing things 100% perfect; we should focus on what we can do at our best. We should always appreciate even the tiniest improvement, we have made. If we do our job consistently; perfectionism will come naturally, even we don’t stress ourselves for it.

Secondly, we should also understand the mind’s nature how it functions. Mind will do its best only when it is at peace, and it is only possible when we are able to accept the results even with 80% accuracy.

“Experience the magic of let go, and see how perfection comes naturally”

3. Trying to control everything -

There are several reasons why people want to control every situation, event and others too around them. But, having a perfectionist mindset is one of the reasons why some people want to control everything. For such people, it is really stressful to see if something goes against their will or plan. Second, the most common reason behind such behavior is a deep routed feeling of uncertainty within us. In this situation, we experience a kind of insecurity that we might lose something or might fail in our endeavor. We try to control things because it, sometimes, also gives us a false sense of being in control so that we can hide the real feeling of uncertainty.

Solution –

To some extent, trying to be in control is good. But, it becomes a mental disorder if we do it obsessively. In such situation, there are few therapies that are performed by psychologists, can help us to come out of such dreadful condition. Deep breathing and Mindfulness can also be practiced in order to cope with this challenge.

Secondly, we can also think what changes we can make in our own perception about the situation that we can’t control. We can learn to focus on the positive side of any unfavorable situations.
